Character counters are included on every field so you can easily see if your new title or description fits in the recommended length (55 for Titles and 160 for descriptions).

Search Descriptions tell search engines and users what your page content is about and are important for SEO and user experience. In the example below the blue linked heading is the ‘Page Title’ and the smaller black text below is the ‘Search Description’ – these help users select which page to click when they do a search.

An effective Title tag should:

  • Briefly describe the page’s content or purpose –  i.e. name of the page, name of the company
  • Be unique for each page within your site
  • Be brief and descriptive – too many characters and they won’t show in a Google search. We recommend no more than 55 characters
  • Include location references within the titles if you are targeting a particular area for your products or services, e.g. if you are targeting North Sydney, you might have a title for your home page of ‘Smith Jones, Chartered Accountants, North Sydney’, and make sure you include those words in the actual content of your page.

An effective Search Description should:

  • Describe the page’s content or purpose
  • Provide a summary of what a particular page is about, without simply repeating the content on the page.
  • Include words used somewhere in the page content.
  • Be unique for each page within your site to help make the search results more useful for searchers so they can easily see what your page relates to.
  • Be roughly 160 characters or less to ensure key words and phrases are included in the blurb, but not cut off on the Search Engine Results Page.
